Helping Your Dog Adjust to Pregnancy and a New Baby

Last updated on June 18, 2013 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

Bringing a baby into the family for the first time is a lifestyle adjustment for any new parent. It’s a time for exciting changes, new routines, and sleepless nights. To the family dog it means even more massive changes: a new role in the family dynamic along with new rules and expectations. To be fair, it can be stressful at the very least! But, there is a great way to ease through this transition into the next phase if it’s handled appropriately and planned in advance.

The dog experts at K9 Kingdom and their revolutionary Pet-ternity Program are ready to walk you through the process as smoothly as possible! The Pet-ternity Program was the brainchild of K9 Kingdom’s owner Christin Bummer and her husband, Dr. Mike Bummer, Ob-Gyn. As his patients shared stories about their first child, the family dog, and concerns about how the dog would react to a pregnancy and then to a newborn in the house, he naturally found himself referring patients to see the trainers at K9 Kingdom for assistance. Having a keen awareness of how much effort it can be to take care of a newborn, and how tricky it can be to take care of a family dog at the same time, Mike created the idea of the Pet-Ternity Program.

At the conclusion of a pregnancy, the last worry on your mind should be, “Is our dog going to be ok? What should we do?” By taking the time to plan ahead, K9 Kingdom makes this important detail as simple as a quick phone call – day or night!

Become a member of K9 Kingdom’s Pet-ternity Leave program and leave the rest to us! Even though the timing is unpredictable, we’ll guarantee accommodations for your dog when it’s time to deliver. We’ll provide a stimulating, social environment for your dog while you are having your baby and recovering in the hospital. You can also enjoy a few extra days to adjust to your new routine at home. Our Pet Limo will gladly provide door-to-door service!

K9 Kingdom trainers will work with your dog to brush up on basic manners, fostering a safe and manageable home environment. We’ll teach and advise techniques to improve baby/dog relationships and address your concerns during this challenging transition. We’ll also focus on the importance of a proper introduction of a newborn into your dog-friendly family. Bring in your baby’s blanket and we’ll start the introduction while your dog is in training!
