Training Tools for Your Dog – K9 Kingdom, Pittsburgh

Last updated on June 28, 2013 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

At K9 Kingdom in northern Pittsburgh, PA,  various training tools are sold in the retail area for dogs. Training tools are used to develop good behaviors in a timely manner. When paired with obedience training, these items can prevent frustration in both dogs and owners. Our Easy Walk Harnesses and Gentle Leader head collars are frequently recommended during our group obedience classes. These items help curb undesirable behaviors such as pulling on leash and jumping to greet people. They offer handlers control that they may not typically have with a traditional collar.

How the Easy Walk Harness Works

Easy Walk harnesses differ from regular harnesses in which the leash clips on the dog’s back. Those types of harnesses actually encourage pulling. Instead, the Easy Walk harness clips across the dog’s chest. If the dog pulls during class or on a walk, the Easy Walk harness will stop the pulling and turn the dog towards its handler. This not only decreases pulling, but also causes the dog to reorient back to its handler, increasing focus.

Dogs typically will acclimate to wearing the harness immediately. No need to desensitize or get the pet used to wearing it.

In addition to encouraging a well behaved dog, an Easy Walk Harness prevents tracheal damage that traditional collars may cause. This is because the chest strap lays low against the chest, and will never put pressure on a dog’s neck.

How the Gentle Leader Head Collar Works

This product is fitted to a dog’s muzzle and head. When fitted properly, it applies slight pressure when the pet pulls. It also redirects the dog back to you. Because it is fitted on the head, it offers maximum control. It is recommended to set up a desensitization process, acclimating your pet to the head collar. A one on one session at K9 Kingdom can provide all of the information needed.

The gentle Leader head collar will discourage dogs from pulling on walks and jumping. In conjunction with training lessons it can discourage barking and help with anxiety or aggression issues.

As with the Easy Walk Harness, the Gentle Leader Head collar when used properly it will not cause any throat issues.

How to Select the Right Training Tool For Your Dog

Selection of which item to purchase is based on each individual pet, owner and time. While the Gentle Leader Head Collar can give a lot of control, it requires some time to acclimate the dog to the head collar. If time is limited and Dogs with short snouts, such as pugs may be better suited using the Easy Walk Harness. All products can be used on puppies 8 weeks and older. The staff at K9 Kingdom can help select the right choice for any dog. Remember, training tools do not substitute group training classes or one on one lessons with a qualified trainer at K9 Kingdom.
