One of the many quality offerings of J. Gibson McIlvain (www.mcilvain.com) is hardwood mouldings and millwork. We handle all the operations in-house and have a full line of capabilities available to you. With moulders, straight line and gang rip saws, custom knife grinders, band resaws, and trimming saws on hand, we can basically manufacture any style you can dream up! With both oil-based and water-based priming and storage facilities for improved inventory control, we’re truly your full-service moulding solution.
Starting with Quality Lumber
We start with quality lumber, carefully selected by you from our sizeable stock of hardwoods and softwoods with help from our knowledgeable staff. We can expertly match the species to your project application and profile. Our on-site inventory makes choosing top-quality lumber and coloring an exciting part of the process. We’re convinced that selecting the right material is essential for high-end millwork, but at the same time, even the most choice lumber can be ruined by tool marks that distract from the perfect grain patterns that you select.
Continuing with Profile Selection
We have an extensive profile catalog, but if it doesn’t include a specific profile you have in mind, we can create a custom profile just for you. From historic restoration projects to contemporary design solutions, we can handle any specs that you provide. Once you provide a blueprint for your profile, we use it to create a plastic die, from which a metal knife is ground. After your knife is ground, inspected, and rechecked for accuracy, your moulding can be produced according to your specifications and constantly reinspected to ensure that it meets our high standards of quality.
Creating Your Custom Millwork
Even the smallest details are given careful thought and expert attention. For instance, our grinders make the straight steel or carbide knives required for your job and then constantly resharpen them throughout the process to ensure even sizing and a smooth finish, regardless of your species of choice. Feed rate and board support are also carefully considered. A series of subtle adjustments and regular tweaking ensures that the number of knife marks will not fail to meet the ever-changing Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI) standards, because you won’t be able to see any knife marks at all. From readjusting the bevel angle or changing the tracer height, we make sure that our machines are reset with the species and profile in view so the finished product is absolutely perfect.
