Today’s Trends in Hardwood Flooring

Interior design trend forecasters are noticing that flooring retailers need to realize that flooring is “the stage on which their customers’ décor dreams are realized.” What are those dreams? While they might vary from person to person and from home to home, most people who are planning home renovations want their new flooring to reflect the latest styles. They want it to look fresh and new. So what does that mean for the upcoming year? Let’s take a look at three main styles that in-the-know designers foresee.

Au Natural Wood Floors

Some are calling it “hyper natural,” this wood flooring style that highlights character and grain. It’s definitely an individual approach, rebelling against the cookie-cutter, mass-produced plastics. Think artisan-style wood floors. Instead of attempting to engineer something void of imperfections — and interest — today’s styles are all about authenticity, with rustic, truly natural materials. Not only is this trend spearheaded by those who are ideologically inclined toward using green products, but it’s also tied to emotional and spiritual ideas, like Feng Shui. Rehmeyer Pioneer Collection character-grade flooring offers plenty of species options, each with their own unique grain patterns and knots.

Reclaimed & Distressed Wood Floors

Like the appeal of hyper natural wood floors, the allure of reclaimed wood is a multi-faceted blend of environmental consciousness and an emotional desire for connectedness with something lasting, with a backstory to it. Today’s mobile society may well be searching for roots: we might not live in the same home as our grandparents did, but with reclaimed wood, we can walk on boards that someone’s grandparents did. Whatever the reasons, psychological and practical, both truly reclaimed wood and distressed wood that offers the appearance of wear offers an aesthetically pleasing beauty that seems especially easy on young eyes.

In addition to Reclaimed Heart Pine, Rehmeyer specializes in Extreme Custom Flooring like this one-of-a-kind Custom-Milled Reclaimed White Oak Floor. For those who prefer the long lengths and wide widths available with new wood, we offer three collections with varying degrees of hand distressing: Old Trail, Legacy, and Authentic Hand Scraped.

Random Width Wood Floors

Continuing in the same vein as the trends toward hyper natural and reclaimed or distressed wood floors, the tendency toward random widths leans away from uniformity and toward individualism. All Rehmeyer floors come with boards with widths of 4, 5, and 6 inches, and a professional installer will position them randomly, providing you with a truly one-of-a-kind work of art.

Not only does Rehmeyer Wood Floors produce the kind of wood floors that today’s homeowners desire, but our company actually embodies the kind of values that today’s styles celebrate. As a family-owned small business, each floor we make is truly made-to-order with you in mind. Our expert craftsmen touch each board multiple times as they form it into something worthy of the Rehmeyer name — and your delightful home. Our many valued customers tell us they like how we treat them like family.

This is some great information, and I appreciate your point that hyper natural wood flooring is trendy right now. My husband and I are going to be renovating our dining room, and I’d like to put hardwood flooring in. I think I would really like something that looks natural and puts emphasis on the grain, so I’ll definitely look into this. Thanks for the great post!
