Many stock flooring manufacturers label their pre-packaged products at big-box retailers with words like “custom” and “hand-crafted” and “quality,” when those words couldn’t be further from accurately describing their products. Unlike words like “organic” within the food industry, there are no requirements for the legal use of such words when describing flooring.
However, when we use those terms at Rehmeyer Wood Floors, we mean exactly what those words have traditionally meant. Of course, some of our options offer more thorough hand-crafting than others, as well as greater customization. So we’d like to detail for you exactly what we mean when we use those terms.
Custom Flooring
We don’t just mean that your floor will appear to have a custom look; we actually mean that you’ll get to choose and customize your floor, with many available options and combinations. We will not select your flooring from already-milled, pre-finished boards already in our warehouse; instead, once we receive your custom order, we will select lumber, mill, and pre-finish the wood flooring specifically for you, right here in York County, Pennsylvania.
You’ll have the option of starting with one of our 5 individual Custom Collections or going with our Extreme Custom flooring, which includes endless possibilities.
Even our Custom Collections provide literally hundreds of possible combinations, when you select from the following:
• 11 Species
• 3 Accent Colors
• Micro-Beveled Edges
• Various Widths
• 2 Types of Finish
Hand-Crafted Flooring
Some of our Custom Collections are more labor-intensive than others, but none of them are mass-produced by machines that produce repetitive faux distressing. When we say our work is done by hand, we mean it literally.
Our Authentic Hand-Scraped Collection is our most labor-intensive selection. After being precision-milled right here in Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania, each board is individually distressed, using no power tools, whatsoever. Instead, we use hand-held scraping tools and sand each surface by hand to achieve our desired effect: individual planks, each with uniquely formed surfaces.
Our skilled craftsmen work hard to hand-scrape a maximum of 50 to 60 board feet per day, and we believe that our labor-intensive approach pays off with a gently-worn look and feel that can’t be replicated by machines.
(Our Old Trail and Legacy collections also utilize hand tools but use some hand-held power tools as well to make hand-scraped flooring more accessible to various tastes and budgets.)
Quality Hardwood Flooring
All the lumber we use is top-grade or character-grade lumber that’s been precision-milled right here in Pennsylvania. Flooring professionals with experience installing flooring from a variety of vendors offer the following descriptions of our products: “by far superior,” “no comparison,” “a great value,” and “highest quality and caliber with precise cuts and intricate detail.”
Our engineered floors are ¾ thick and feature a wear layer that’s 3/16” thick, allowing us to utilize our hand-crafting techniques as well as to mortise our hand-shaped decorative pegs (some of the unique options we have available for added customization). Our engineered floors feature an 11-ply Baltic Birch core product, allowing wide-width boards to be used almost anywhere, regardless of climate and building specs.
