Wood Flooring: Environmental & Economic Benefits

The many customers who desire to have Custom Milled, Wide Plank Flooring from Rehmeyer Wood Floors installed typically begin at the same starting point: they know they want quality hardwood flooring throughout their home or business. In case you’re not quite there yet, give us a chance to convince you. We think you’ll be persuaded, and then we hope you’ll stick around to see why our customers have fallen in love with the premium wood flooring we craft right here in York County, Pennsylvania.

Environmental Benefits

The emphasis on sustainability that we see valued in many aspects of Contemporary Interior Design is heralded by the National Wood Flooring Association as the chief benefit of wood flooring. While some of the other main perks of wood floors are somewhat subjective, this one is not up for debate. Thanks to today’s sustainably managed forests, the lumber industry is able to provide a renewable resource that has little impact on the environment; instead, the harvesting of trees actually has a positive impact on rainforests and the ecosystem, at large. (Contrary to some myths, deforestation is largely due to lack of demand or bans or restrictions on lumber, rather than overharvesting.)

As significant as the contribution to the health of forests is, the environmental benefits of wood floors certainly don’t end there. Real wood floors also use significantly less energy to produce than do other flooring options. As a carbon-neutral product, a wood floor stores carbon during its lifetime, after which it can be recycled, never adding to the carbon that contributes negatively to our environment; at the same time, wood floors last many years, anyway, so any energy used in order to produce it still pales by comparison to other flooring types. Finally, those who live, work, and visit the space with wood floors enjoy air quality that’s superior to places with other flooring types.

Economic Benefits

While the initial expense of quality wood flooring may be daunting, it’s truly an investment that reaps benefits over time. Unlike carpet and other flooring types, the beauty of wood floors actually increases over time. Instead of the unsightly wear and tear which you can see on carpeting that isn’t replaced every 5 years or so, wood flooring collects added wear marks that contribute to the timeless beauty of distressed wood flooring, such as the Rehmeyer Authentic Hand Scraped Collection flooring. (The foot-worn feel of our Legacy Collection or hand-distressed Old Trail Collection flooring also fall into the same category.)

The economic benefits of owning a wood floor don’t end when it’s time for you to move on. In fact, some real estate agents estimate that homes featuring wood floors can sell twice as quickly as homes with other flooring types. With a quality wood floor, you’re investing in your home’s value for the long term, rather than simply making a purchase that makes sense for today.

I’ve always loved the look of wood floors and I would really like to have some in my house. I think a wood floor would make my kitchen look so amazing. You mentioned that wood is nice because it doesn’t need to be replaced as often as carpet. How often does it need to be replaced?

I also love the way that wood flooring looks! Other than it being environmentally and economically friendly, I find that it adds such beauty and character to a home. I love that it can add a timeless and elegant look.

This is some great information, and I appreciate your point that hardwood flooring pays off over time. My husband and I are going to be renovating our dining room, and I’m trying to decide what kind of floor I want in there. I’d prefer something that lasts a long time so I don’t have to worry about replacing it, so I’ll definitely look into hardwood. Thanks for the great post!

You really caught my attention when you talked about how wood flooring materials can help you get a “timeless” look for your home. We’re sure that we want to invest into this home for years and years to come, so I can see a material like this being perfect for our purposes. I’ll take your advice and look for a wood flooring expert in the area so they can assist us with getting all of this installed.
