Awesome Advantages of Owning a Swimming Pool, Part 2

Last updated on October 6, 2026 by Adverticia Staff 1 Comment

In our previous post, we explored some of the ways a swimming pool can add enjoyment, recreation and opportunities for family time to your backyard. Here are a few more reasons you might want to consider installing a pool of your own.

Pools Can Be Enhanced with Technology

Today’s pool owners have access to technology that can make operating and enjoying a swimming pool considerably more convenient. Depending on the equipment you choose, pool automation systems can allow you to control features such as pumps, heaters, lighting, water features and spas from a control panel, smartphone or other connected device.

Some systems can also integrate with compatible smart-home technology, making it possible to control certain pool features without walking out to the equipment pad every time you want to make an adjustment. The exact capabilities depend on the equipment and automation system, but technology can make managing a modern pool quite a bit different from what pool ownership looked like a generation ago.

Pools Can Transform the Look of Your Outdoor Space

Does your backyard feel a little boring or unfinished? Adding a swimming pool can dramatically change both the appearance and function of your outdoor living space. Pools are available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, materials and designs, giving homeowners plenty of opportunities to choose something that complements the style of their home and property.

The pool can also become the visual focal point around which the rest of the backyard is designed. A thoughtfully planned patio or deck, attractive landscaping, comfortable outdoor furniture, lighting and other features can help turn an ordinary yard into an inviting outdoor living area.

Of course, good design involves more than appearance alone. Think about how people will move around the pool, where you’ll want seating and shade, how the landscaping will affect maintenance, and what safety features your household needs. Planning the entire space together can result in a backyard that looks good while also working well for the people who use it.

Pools Can Bring Some Vacation Fun Home

Though traveling can be an exciting adventure, it can also require plenty of planning, packing, driving or flying – not to mention the expense involved. Owning a swimming pool won’t replace the experience of exploring a new destination, but it can give you another recreational option without leaving home.

A summer afternoon in the backyard can become its own little getaway. You can swim, relax beside the water, invite friends over or enjoy a family day without packing suitcases or making reservations. You may even decide to spend some of your vacation time closer to home, combining days around the pool with trips to local museums, sporting events, parks and other nearby attractions.

The point isn’t that a swimming pool eliminates the need for vacations. It simply gives you another way to enjoy your leisure time – one that happens to be right outside your back door.

A Pool May Add Appeal for Some Homebuyers

Your family’s own enjoyment is usually a much better reason to install a swimming pool than the expectation of making money from it someday. Still, a well-designed and properly maintained pool may be an attractive feature to some prospective buyers if you eventually decide to sell your home.

How much a pool affects a home’s resale value can vary considerably. Location, climate, neighborhood, pool type, condition, maintenance requirements and the preferences of individual buyers can all play a role. In some markets, a pool may be a particularly desirable backyard feature; in others, some buyers may view the maintenance and operating costs as a drawback.

That’s why it makes sense to think of a swimming pool primarily as an investment in how you and your family want to use your home rather than assuming that the entire cost will eventually be recovered through a higher selling price. Keep the pool and surrounding area well maintained, and any potential resale benefit can be considered an added bonus.

Pools Can Bring Years of Enjoyment

Many of the leisure and recreational activities we spend money on are relatively short-lived. A movie lasts a couple of hours, an amusement park visit lasts a day, and even a memorable vacation eventually comes to an end. A well-maintained swimming pool, on the other hand, can become part of your family’s home life for many years.

How you use it may even change over time. A pool that begins as a place where young children learn to swim may later become the setting for birthday parties, teenage gatherings, exercise, quiet afternoons, family cookouts and visits from grandchildren. That long-term versatility is one of the things that can make pool ownership so appealing.

Once you’ve considered the advantages as well as the costs and responsibilities that come with pool ownership, you may decide it’s worth talking with an experienced pool contractor about what would work for your property. A knowledgeable professional can evaluate your available space, discuss your goals and budget, explain different pool types and features, and help you understand what may be involved in turning your backyard plans into reality.

I loved how you mentioned that adding a pool to your backyard can give your property an eye-catching thing to look at. My wife and I are wanting to add some uniqueness to our house and we were wondering what we could do to make the yard look better. I’ll be sure to tell her that we should look to add an impressive pool to the backyard.
