Getting Started with X10 Home Automation

Last updated on March 24, 2016 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

If you thought home automation was just for expert techies, think again! If you can plug in a table lamp and operate a simple remote control, you can operate X10 home automation! Scheduling and operating household lights and appliances is no longer out of reach for the average homeowner or renter. Check out this video tutorial for an introduction, and then we’ll look at the basic components of your X10 home automation system. (You know you want one.)

Our Wired Kit: The MiniTimer Starter Kit

Not all our home automation devices require wireless signals. Our MiniTimer Starter Kit sends signals directly through existing powerlines, triggering modules attached to lamps and other appliances. (Check out LM465, LM15A, AM466, and AM486.) The MiniTimer Control Kit is essentially an alarm clock that can control all the appliances throughout your entire home! All you have to do to set it up is — wait for it — take it out of the box and plug it in. Seriously, that’s it! It takes less than five minutes.

Our Basic Wireless Kit: The Wireless Starter Kit

The X10 Wireless Starter Kit includes a KR19A Keychain Remote as well as a Transceiver (TM751) and Incandescent Lamp Module (LM465). With this kit, you do have to plug in two items, but setup is still quite simple.

The Wireless Transceiver (TM751) functions by receiving Wireless RF signals from wireless remotes such as our Slimline Switch (SS13A) and then sending that signal through existing powerlines, triggering modules attached to your lamps and other appliances. The signal can turn them on or off or dim them (yes, even if they don’t have built-in dimming capabilities). The transceiver can accommodate a single incandescent light, which can be dimmed, as well as an additional item that can be turned on and off via the remote.

Our Outdoor Starter Kit: Driveway Sensor Alert Kit

Minimal set-up combines with impressive functionality. The kit includes the X10 Wireless Transceiver (TM751), which allows you to combine this kit with any of our other X10 Home Automation Kits and Products.
