One of the simplest places to start is with your home’s light fixtures, so let’s take a look at what you’ll need to automate your lamps.
The Basic Lamp Module
Essentially, the LM15A Lamp Module allows you to control any light bulb into your home, whether it’s in a table lamp, floor lamp, or another fixture. The only restrictions relate to the piece’s height, since it will extend your light bulb approximately 1.25 inches.
Setup is a cinch: All you have to do is screw the LM15A Lamp Module into the light bulb socket and then screw in the bulb. Then use your X10 controller-of-choice and use it to send the “On” code you decide on, three times. For instance, if you want your lamp to respond to “A3,” then set the “A3, On” command three times. In response, the light will turn on, letting you know that the code was received.
As long as your light fixture allows for the 1.25-inch extension, your lamp’s automation will be completely invisible. This concealed approach to automation allows your home to become automated simply and without bulky and unsightly additions that would disrupt your décor scheme. Like all other standard X10 products, the LM15A also comes with a 120-day Manufacturer’s Warranty.
The Dimming Lamp Module
The LM465 Lamp Module is our most popular lamp module, enabling you to control any light fixture in your home, at the touch of a button. As with the LM15A described above, you’ll also need your favorite X10 controller.
Because you plug it into the wall before you plug in the lamp’s cord, the LM465 cannot be used with mounted fixtures hard-wired into your home’s electrical system; however, it lacks the space constraints that the LM15A have.
Unlike the more basic LM15A, the LM465 allows you to do more than simply turn your lights on or off; you can also dim or brighten the light remotely. If your lamp uses a form of alternative lighting that cannot be dimmed, you may prefer the AM466 Appliance Module instead.
The Basic Appliance Module
Like the LM465 Lamp Module, the AM466 3-Pin Plug-In Module is plugged into the wall, where your light or appliance is plugged into it. The AM466 is suitable for lights or other appliances that are plugged in to 3-pin outlets. (The 2-Pin polarized version is the AM486.)
Unlike the LM465, the AM466 does not allow for dimming; instead, it simply provides the option of turning appliances on or off.
Setup is easy: Just plug in the AM466 into any 3-pin outlet, plug in the unit you desire to control, set the code to match your controller, and you’re good to go! Rated at 15 amps, 500 Watts, 1/3hp, this plug-in module can be used to control various lamps and other appliances throughout your home.
