If your life revolves around swimming pools like ours does, summer is officially prime pool season, which makes the official title of what most people call “spring” become the “getting-ready-for-pool-season” season. Wow, that was a mouthful. But you get the idea. If you’re serious about getting your outdoor space ready for the main event but find the big to-do list daunting, we’ve broken it down into 3 collections of activities: early spring activities, mid-spring activities, and late spring activities. Now if you wait to do them all in late spring, you might enjoy that adrenaline rush. But you also might lack any energy to start planning those pool parties you’ve been dreaming about. So don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Late Spring Activities Overview
If you’ve been following this series, by late spring you’ll already be well on your way to being able to delight in a fabulous outdoor space that’s perfect for hosting the wonderful outdoor parties you’ve been dreaming of all year! Some of the activities we’ll recommend for late spring may seem redundant, but really, there are some maintenance tasks you just can’t overdo.
Late Spring Activities, Set 1: Pruning More
Don’t say I didn’t warn you: this is going to seem a bit redundant. But it is actually important to prune multiple times. The first pruning, which you did in early spring, helped your plants preserve their energy to be used on the parts you want to focus on. This time, the pruning is to remove any already-spent spring blossoms in order to help prepare them for next year’s growth.
Late Spring Activities, Set 2: Planting More Flowers
As we inch closer to summer, the brightly colored summer annuals are now ready to add their vibrancy to your space. Some favorites include zinnias, impatiens, and petunias. In order to get the most life out of your annuals, be sure to select plants that aren’t yet in full bloom, so they will be more likely to have a hardy start in their new home, your yard. Once the threat of frost is behind you, you can also plant any bulbs for summer blooms, such as dahlias and gladiolus.
Late Spring Activities, Set 3: Planting More Vegetables
If you have some more space in your veggie patch, this is the time to plant your herbs, peppers, and tomatoes. Even if you don’t have space for a full-blown vegetable garden, just a small container garden with a few herbs can allow you to add some garden-fresh herbs or veggies to your al fresco meals. There are so many health benefits of growing your own food. You might be surprised by how delightful and addicting it becomes!
