Installing a pool in your backyard is a great way to encourage quality family time. Rather than simply swimming laps for exercise and then sitting on the patio watching the kids play, parents can get in on the action. Here are some creative ideas for fun games that will bring the whole family together to make special memories in the pool.

Have Some Hide and Seek Fun With Marco Polo

Most of you have at some point in your life probably played this popular pool game before. One person is chosen to close their eyes and say “Marco!” Everyone else is supposed to answer “Polo!” The person with their eyes closed has to try to reach out and touch someone else in the water just by following the sound of their voice. This game is easy for even younger children to play as long as they’re able to stand up in the pool.

Encourage Breath Control With Submarine Races

In this game, participants pretend to be submarines. As you know, submarines are vessels that move entirely under the water. Start by seeing which of the submarines can swim across the width of the pool without having to come up for air. Gradually, as kids get to be even stronger swimmers, they may be able to swim the entire length of the pool on just one breath. This is a great game for the adults to take part in too! Some people are so good at this game that they’re able to go even longer than one pool length at a time without coming up for air.

A word of caution is in order with this game. Make sure not to play it too many times in a row or you may find that they’re getting too tired out. Be sure to take breaks and have everyone catch their breath for a few minutes between races. As always, be sure that a responsible adult is supervising the kids in the pool at all times.

Search for Loot at the Bottom of the Sea with a Treasure Hunt

If your kids enjoy make-believe games, you can pretend that there’s been a shipwreck in your very own backyard ocean. Your kids can become the undersea divers searching to find the treasure. You can decide what the treasure is going to be like. It could be actual coins, their favorite pool toss rings, or whatever type of pool toy or item you want to choose. Just make sure it’s something that will sink to the bottom of the pool. If you want to make the game more competitive, you could split the kids up into teams or time them to see who comes up with the most treasure in a certain amount of time.

As you can see, there are a whole host of fantastic pool games you can play in the water with your family. In our next article in this series, we’ll share some more fun ideas for your backyard bonding and enjoyment time.
