Libraries Turning to Custom Flash Drives

Last updated on March 26, 2011 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

blue usb flash driveCustom flash drives may seem like something ideal for retailers, especially those that work in technology, but they also benefit non-profit organizations. For instance, over 250 public libraries are now using CFGear’s custom flash drives to help meet their own needs in today’s challenging market. As non-profits, these organizations need affordable, yet quality products for their needs.

Today’s libraries are facing many problems. Technology is advancing quickly, and libraries are expected to be at the forefront of this, yet these advances bring changes in security that create genuine problems for libraries. Librarians who need to keep files secure can no longer save them to the computer, even if the computer is not available for public use.

Also, people often come to the library to use the public computers when they do not have access to a computer at home. The result is that they end up with files they need to store on a mobile device. Storing them on the public computer is not secure, nor does it give them access to the files later when they may be using a different machine.

The solution to these security problems is to find an external storage solution. CDs can work, but they are cumbersome, easily damaged and rarely hold as much as is necessary. Also, the many different options out there make it challenging for libraries to find the right one for their specific needs.

Libraries are also facing financial shortages. They are free services, and as such do not get much in the way of funds from their customers. They rely on public funding and donations, both of which are declining rapidly. Yet, the demand for what they offer is increasing tremendously.

Customized USB flash drives provide an ideal solution. More compact than CDs, yet able to hold more data in many instances, they can be used to store data and move it around from one machine to the next. A single 128 MB flash drive can hold up to 250 pages, and there are larger flash drives available as well. This can be a more convenient way for libraries to store their files.

They can also be used to increase revenue. A patron who needs to store files will be more than willing to spend a little bit to buy a flash drive, and the library can use the funds to help its budget. Add the library’s logo or contact information to the flash drive, and you have an opportunity to do a little marketing while still meeting the needs of patrons and improving cash flow.

Custom flash drives are an affordable and versatile way for libraries to meet several of their needs. With the help of CFGear, over 300 libraries across the country are raising revenue, increasing exposure and better meeting the needs of their patrons with the help of custom flash drives.
