You don’t have to spend a lot of money on fancy vacation outings in faraway places to create some awesome memories with your family. You can have plenty of fun with your kids or grandchildren right in your own backyard pool (see Parts 1 & 2). Here are some more great games to try with them if they get tired of just swimming or doing tricks in the water.
Scream, Giggle and Splash Your Way to Fun With a Game of Sharks and Minnows
Kids love games like tag where one person is “it” and has to catch everyone else. Sharks and Minnows is the water version of this popular pastime. One person gets to be the shark. The shark stands out in the middle of the water. The minnows are all lined up along the edge of the pool. At the sound of “Ready, set, go!” the minnows take off and try to race their way across the pool without being tagged by the shark. If the shark does manage to tag them on their perilous journey, they’re out of the game. Eventually, it will narrow down to just one minnow facing the mighty shark! Kids and adults alike can’t get enough of this action-packed game of water tag!
Push Your Way to Victory With a Beach Ball Race
For this game, each participant will need their own beach ball. They’ll race across the pool pushing their ball in front of them. The first person who makes it to the other side is the winner. No one is allowed to toss or grab onto their ball. Instead, it has to stay on top of the water at all times. This beach ball race can be challenging at first, but it’s likely to quickly become a family favorite.
Add an Element of Suspense With a Game of “What Time Is It, Mr. Fox?”
“What Time is It Mr. Fox?” is somewhat similar to Sharks and Minnows in the sense that it involves one person designated as “it” to chase and tag the other players. But there’s a twist. In this fun game that can be played either on land or in the water, Mr. Fox stands on one side of the pool with his back to everyone else. Then the other players, who begin by standing against the edge of the pool, shout out in unison, “What Time is It, Mr. Fox?” Mr. Fox yells out any time from one o’clock to twelve o’clock. The players then have to take that number of steps out into the water. At any time when the question is asked, Mr. Fox can, instead of calling out a number, answer, “Dinner Time!” He then turns around and tries to tag one of the other players, who will then become the new Mr. Fox. One advantage of this version of “water tag” is that there’s no time period where multiple people will end up being out and having to wait to play until the next round.
These simple yet sensational pool games are just a few of the many exciting ways you can enjoy quality time in the pool with your family this summer. Happy splashing!
