Installing a swimming pool is a dream come true for many homeowners. Finally, they have a way to relax and enjoy fun in the sun with their family and friends from the comfort of their very own backyards. Over the years, however, that dream can begin to fade or even turn into a nightmare if pool owners let their pools suffer from neglect and fall into disrepair. If you’re a pool owner and your pool has seen better days, it may be time to consider pool remodeling and renovation. In this series of articles, we’ll explore some of the different types of remodeling projects that you may want to consider for sprucing up your backyard oasis.

When it Comes to Remodeling, Put Safety First

Ideally, you should include all the safety features your pool could ever need right from the get-go. However, in case you may have missed any, remodeling gives you the perfect opportunity to make sure that your pool area is as safe as possible for your family and guests.

Consider a Barrier to Prevent Unauthorized Access

Many of the safety features you’ll want to consider adding to your pool have to do with preventing children or pets from making their way into the pool when there’s no one around to properly supervise them. These types of preventative safety features would include barriers, such as walls or fences, that can completely surround your pool. Make sure you choose a strong, secure barrier that’s specifically built for use around a pool and which is made from a durable material. Get one with a gate that’s designed to keep young kids from figuring out how to get into the pool on their own.

Add Alarms for Extra Protection

Along with a fence, you could set up an alarm system to alert you in case anyone does get into the pool area without permission. You can get just one alarm, or multiple different alarms at various points of entry, such as on gates, windows, doors, pool perimeters, or wearable wrist alarms you can put onto children who come to visit. Kids are fast and can be very quiet when they’re trying to get into an area without being noticed. With an alarm system, you’ll have an extra layer of protection to hopefully prevent a tragic drowning from occurring in your backyard pool.

Include Railings and Ladders to Make Access to the Pool Less Dangerous

In addition to preventing unauthorized entry into your pool, you also want to keep your pool as safe as possible for those who are supposed to be getting into and out of it. These types of safety features would include ladders, steps, and railings to help your friends and family members enter and leave the pool without falling and getting hurt. You could even add a zero-entry feature to help those with mobility issues gain access to your pool without having to climb at all. This gradual, gentle slope is a great way for young children and the elderly to ease their way into or out of the pool slowly and carefully.
