Save on College Textbooks

Last updated on July 28, 2013 by Adverticia Staff Leave a Comment

choosing majorTextbooks can be a burden to any college student’s credit card. With costs of hundreds of dollars per semester, students should research possible ways to find the bargains. Some students only use a textbook for the sixteen week semester or a year or two. After college, textbooks have a tendency to take up space on a bookshelf and collect dust. Textbooks do not have to be a burden to any college student. There are various ways to save money on textbooks by renting, borrowing, and planning ahead.

Visit the library

Many college libraries carry copies of textbooks. By signing up for a library card, students can check the textbooks out. One drawback of using a library’s copy of a textbook is the due date. Some libraries do not allow students to check out a book for the entire semester. This becomes a problem when the book is due and the semester is not yet over. Before a student decides to obtain textbooks from the library, they should be aware of the limitations and restrictions.

Borrow from friends

While in college, students build lasting friendships with their classmates. Before a semester begins, a student should check with other classmates to see if they have already taken a class. If they have, they may still have the textbook for the student to borrow. The classmate may be taking a class the student has already taken and can work out a direct exchange of textbooks for the semester. If nothing else, classmates may know of another person with the desired textbook. By asking around, a student expands its chances of borrowing a textbook from a friend.

Rent text books

Renting textbooks costs a fraction of the cost of buying. Many college bookstores allow students to rent their textbooks. Online websites such as Chegg.com and TextbookRentals.com are also valuable resources. By renting the textbook, a student can use it for the semester and then return it. Drawbacks from renting textbooks include hidden charges and restrictions on writing or highlighting inside the book.

Plan ahead

Many students prefer to buy their textbooks. Once a student registers for a class, they should order the textbook. Many online websites and college bookstores increase their prices a few weeks before classes begin. The earlier a student plans, the less there will be a burden on their wallet.

Use Financial Aid

Many students take out loans to cover the costs of college. Many federal, state, and school loans can be used to pay for textbooks. Some schools offer textbook scholarships or gift cards to the school bookstore. Students should research and apply for possible discounts to help pay for their textbooks.

Buy backs

Many college bookstores buy their textbooks back for a fraction of the cost at the end of the semester. Students may also sell their books on websites such as Amazon.com or Half.com. By selling their textbooks, students can save a few dollars to use for textbooks the following semester.

Textbooks can be a hassle for the student and their wallet. However, by planning ahead and researching for the best deals, students can reduce the stress and agitation of textbooks.
