Simple & Inexpensive Decorating Ideas to Warm up Your Home for the Fall

Even though the afternoons are still warm enough to wear sandals, there was no denying the frost on my windshield yesterday morning. The weather is changing! It’s time to start thinking about leaves crunching under your feet and curling up in your favorite throw. Here are a few simple tips to start transitioning your home for the chilly days that are just around the corner.

Cooler weather means spending more time indoors, and this calls for cozy and comfy! Adding some plush throw pillows in different sizes and warm colors to your sofa will do the trick. Having some cozy throws within reach is essential, too. Place one neatly and casually over the back of your sofa or on an ottoman for an informal, elegant look and quick access for your cold toes.

If your rooms tend to be drafty, change out the summer window shears for something heavier like a gorgeous velvet or lined silk Dupioni drape. We can talk color for days, so to keep it simple go for darker, warm tones (warm colors are red, orange and yellow; cool colors are blue, green and violet). Not only will they will be visually cozy, they’ll offer the added insulation you may need.

Adding some accent lighting to your space will also add warmth. Use some soft lighting that is not general (your ceiling fixture) or task (your desk lamp). This can be candlelight, above or under-cabinet lighting, or an accent lamp on your mantle or end table. Try flanking the fireplace with two gorgeous pillar candle sconces, or three or four lining the hallway or stairwell. This type of decorative lighting is welcoming and creates instant warmth in your home.

Oh, and one last thing… don’t forget to call the chimney sweep to give your fireplace a checkup!
