It might not be quite as significant as the advent of X10 Home Automation and Home Security, but the WM100 X10 WiFi HUB for Android and Apple devices certainly takes the convenience inherent in the basic X10 model to new heights of complexity and customization. The option of controlling your X10 units from any place where your iPhone or Android smartphone is online is really only the beginning — even if it is a pretty big deal on its own!
How the HUB Works
The WM100 works by communicating with your home’s WiFi router. While that sounds like it involves a pretty technical process, don’t worry: we’ve done the hard part for you. All you have to do is plug in the HUB within 100 feet of your router’s position and then download the “X10 WiFi” app. Following this, simply follow the onscreen directions, enabling you to establish a connection between your router and your WM100 X10 device. After that connection has been established, you can add up to 32 X10 modules — even older ones!
What the HUB Does
The basic function of the WM100 is to give you the opportunity to control your X10 devices from anywhere. You will be able to perform the same kinds of functions remotely which you formerly were able to do only when physically inside your home, such as setting up and controlling the various X10 codes. You can set timers on various schedules — daily, weekly, and more. You can also incorporate a security feature by making it appear as if someone is home even when you’re actually away from the house. In addition to these fairly simple functions, though, we think you’ll be pretty impressed with the advanced programming capabilities of the WM100.
What Else the HUB Can Do
The HUB also comes with more complex setting possibilities, including “Rooms” and “Scenes.” The Rooms component allows you to group multiple actions in a designated location in your home. If you have multiple X10 devices in a single room, you can turn them all on or off at the same time with the push of just one button.
The Scenes feature is even more complex, allowing you to perform various actions at once, regardless of proximity to one another. For instance, you might set a “Sleep” Scene, in which your living room lights would turn off, your hallway lights would turn on to 50%, and then, 10 minutes later, your bedside lamp and bedroom fan would turn on and the hallway light would turn off. It won’t quite turn down the bedding for you, but pretty close!
The WM100 is capable of controlling up to 32 codes, but if you need a second unit, you can easily add one. Over-the-Air firmware will perform necessary updates automatically, and with easily editable settings and a built-in memory, we think you’ll find the WM100 HUB the best thing since, well, X10!
