From what you call it to how and where you wear it, I think we’d all agree that handbag choices can make or break your image. Whether or not you decide to let your body size or shape determine the size handbag you carry, whatever size or style you choose will appear more flattering if you carry it correctly. Now, what exactly do we mean by “correctly”? There are several areas to consider, including healthful, elegant, suitable, and appropriate.
Carry Your Handbag in a Healthful Way
Especially with the trend toward enormous handbags, it can be a tendency to overfill your bag, something that can affect your posture and even cause painful neck and back injuries. This issue is becoming so common that some are referring to it as “Heavy Purse Syndrome.” Especially if you’re carrying more weight than you should on a regular basis, you can do permanent damage to your spine.
Does that mean that you can’t use that great oversized bag you just bought? Of course not. You just need to pare down its contents. Avoid including “just in case” items and only include what you really need to bring along — even if there’s room for plenty more. Instead, pack a separate bag with those items and leave it where you can easily grab it when the occasion requires. For a hand-held design, avoid carrying your bag in the crook of your elbow, a position that could, over time, lead to tendonitis.
Carry Your Handbag with Elegance
If you’re carrying around too much weight, not only will your spinal health be compromised, but so will your elegant appearance. As important as fashion may be, how you carry yourself is even more significant, when it comes to how others perceive you. If you’re uncomfortable carrying your bag or constantly have to readjust it, you won’t exude the kind of confidence and elegance that you desire — no matter how amazing the bag looks on its own.
Part of making sure you can carry yourself with elegance with any given bag is to adjust straps appropriately and decide ahead of time whether you can comfortably and confidently wear a particular handbag. One way to ensure that you can carry your chosen bag without compromising your image is to practice carrying it around the house until you’re comfortable with it. (Better yet, practice in the store for a few minutes before you buy it; that way, you can avoid purchasing a handbag that really doesn’t work well for you.)
In our next post, we’ll look at the two remaining characteristics of a great handbag and especially one that works for you: it’s suitable for your body shape and appropriate for the occasion.
