Pants That Won’t Make Your Butt Look Big (Even if It Kinda Is)

Women’s pants (and jeans, especially) come in a wide variety of lengths, rises, and cuts, and not all of them look great on every body type. If your bottom half is larger than your top half, you can carefully select pants that will flatter your shape.

Don’t Go Too Tight

If you choose pants that are too tight, they won’t make your backside look smaller; in fact, they’ll do the opposite. One obvious way to tell that pants are too tight is that they give you that far-from-attractive “muffin top” effect above the waistline. Other things that should tip you off that the fit is too tight is when the seams make indentations on the sides of your legs or at your waistline; your movement is limited or you have to hold your breath; or you can’t pinch any fabric around your thighs. While you don’t want pants to be too tight, you do want jeans in particular to have a little stretch to help them contour around your curves.

Choose the Right Rise

For those with larger bottoms, low-rise pants won’t be attractive – no matter how much in vogue they may be. Instead, mid or high-rise pants will offer more material to cover your back side and allow you to feel comfortable as well. (And the good news is that high-waisted pants are making a comeback this year!)

Consider Pocket Position

Did you know that where pockets are can make a big difference in how they affect your appearance? Higher pockets can make your rear look larger, while pockets that are a little lower can help visually slim your back side. Of course, flaps or extra embellishments can add unnecessary bulk and draw extra attention to the body part you don’t want to accentuate.

Focus on Cut, Length, and Wash

Flared or boot cut jeans, as well as wide-leg pants, can definitely help balance your figure. Draped pant styles, such as the harem pant, can also appear stylish while giving generous space for those with larger bottoms and thighs. When it comes to length, choosing longer lengths that barely skim the floor can make you appear taller and slimmer. Darker washes, like all dark clothing, can also have a slimming effect.

Think Again About Petites

Did you know that Petite sizes aren’t just for those super-small women? It’s really just a designation referring to length. If you’re 5’3” or shorter, Petite sizes will probably be helpful for you, even if you need to look for Plus Size Petite or Queen Petite sizes. Of course, you could always get longer, “average length” pants tailored or hemmed, but you can avoid that extra step and expense by shopping in the Petite section.
