Finding a handbag that’s right for you is definitely an important part of creating the fashion-forward image you desire; the latest trends may or may not work best for your body size or personal style. But no matter what kind of handbag you choose, something that will influence how well it works for you will be how you carry it.

In Part 1, we discussed the importance of carrying your handbag-of-choice in a way that’s conducive to your spinal health as well as your overall elegance. But now we’ll look at two other characteristics of how you wear your handbag that can either make or break your overall look.

Carry Your Handbag in a Way That’s Suitable for Shape

Your body shape, not just your size, can help inform the kind of handbag you carry as well as where on your body you choose to carry it.

For instance, if you have a wider mid-section or a pear-shaped body, you won’t want to add bulk to that area; instead, choose a handbag with shorter straps that will keep it higher on your body. Alternatively, you could choose a hand-held style.

If you have a more abundant bustline, you’ll want to choose a handbag with longer straps so you don’t add volume to your already voluptuous area. If you truly prefer shorter straps, consider a bag with a slim design under the arm or push the bag to your back. Well-endowed women should generally avoid cross-body styles, as well.

Carry Your Handbag in a Way That’s Appropriate for the Occasion

There’s a lot more leeway when it comes to your everyday bag, whether you’re out shopping, working, or going out to lunch. However, when it comes to eveningwear, there’s only one style that’s really appropriate: a small clutch is a must-have option for any body size and style. Of course, if you’re afraid of making yourself look larger than you are, you can minimize the effect of a small handbag by using what you already know about contrast and how it affects scale and choosing a color that blends in with your outfit.

A clutch is designed, as its name implies, to be carried in your hand. Some clutches do include removable straps, as well. If you do clutch your evening bag, be sure to keep your fingers together and carry it in a way that allows it to appear to be the kind of elegant accessory that it’s intended to be. You can choose from 5 stylish ways to carry your clutch.

No matter what kind of handbag you carry or what length the straps are, it’s always best to carry your handbag on your left side, freeing your right hand up for social interaction.
