If you’ve read previous posts about our starter kits, lamp modules, A/V equipment integration, wireless controllers, and decorator wall switches, you’ve probably noticed that there’s a common denominator: The Transceiver.
While most X10 signals are relayed through your home’s existing wiring, the command signals you send through your wireless controller have to be connected into your wiring through some kind of device; the Transceiver is that device.
X10 Plug-in Transceiver Module
The TM751 Plug-in Transceiver Module from X10 functions by picking up RF signals from your choice of X10 remotes. The TM751 then sends those signals through your home’s wiring to any connected modules.
The TM751 is truly the heart and soul of your home-automation system. Not only does it connect to appliance and lamp modules, but it also features a built-in appliance module of its own, similar to the AM486 Appliance Module.
A single TM751 Transceiver Module allows you to use any X10 Wireless Controller from any room of your home to control any connected lights, appliances, or devices. (Most homes can be fully automated with a single transceiver.) The TM751 allows you to set the mood — complete with lighting, temperature, and music—before you enter a room.
X10 2-Way Plug-in Transceiver Module
The RR501 2-Way Plug-in Transceiver Module offers simplicity and convenience in relaying RF signals from any X10 wireless controller or motion sensor through your home’s existing wiring to all your X10 modules. With no need to run new cables, this simple, cost-effective transceiver allows you to automate your home without a major construction project. You can impress your guests and easily create the ambiance you desire, without leaving the room or even getting out of your favorite chair.
While most home automation systems will be able to function with only one transceiver, spaces requiring multiple transceivers may incur signal collisions with models such as the TM751. However, even if you need to use more than one RR501 to cover a large area, you won’t have to worry about such issues.
The RR501 is designed to wait until electrical lines are clear for sending signals, making it ideal for locations needing more than one transceiver. The RR501 Transceiver can be programmed to control up to 16 sets of appliances or lights and includes its own appliance module. It can pick up signals from any X10 motion sensors, timers, or wireless controllers.
Most X10 home automation systems will be able to run on one or two TM751 Plug-in Transceivers or RR501 2-Way Plug-in Transceiver Modules. However, if you’re also using X10 security cameras, your system will require a little more intelligence, and you’ll find the brainpower you need in the CM15A ActiveHome Pro USB Transceiver Module.
