When it’s time to re-build your wardrobe, a basic understanding of universal colors is certainly helpful. So is what makes certain color combinations work (see Part 1). While some pairings are definitely complementary, they may not be seen as exactly in vogue. So we’ll look at several decidedly on-trend color combinations for 2019 that will not only have you looking coordinated but will also have you seen as chic.
Lemon & Lime & Warm Hues, Too
You know those flavors go together, but what about the colors? Since yellow and green are neighbors on the color wheel, this combination relies on the analogous concept of color coordination. Think of the many places you’ve seen this combination: a daisy peeking out from freshly cut grass or a bouquet of daisies complete with bright green leaves. But summer isn’t the only time this combination will shine! In the truest versions of these colors, this crisp combination is certainly a bright one, so those with warm-toned skin may want to tone it down a bit and use darker, warmer versions, such as mustard and khaki. For those with cool-toned coloring, brighter versions of both colors can totally work. Of course, you can also use a neutral, universal color to break them up — jeans, grays, and whites are some of our favorites.
Keeping Tan from Looking Drab
Tan gets a bad rap these days, doesn’t it? As a lighter neutral color, it can certainly become bland. After all, an entire outfit with such a light neutral definitely gives a nod to ancient history—not the look you’re going for at all! The key is to make sure to cut the tan at the waistline — whether you use it on top or on bottom — and pair it with a deep hue such as maroon. A key concept in this color combination is to carefully pair interesting textures, too. Think satin and corduroy or, for warmer weather, linen and lace. Leopard print accessories can help complete this look.
Orange and Black: a Trick or a Treat?
October 31 isn’t the only day when combining orange and black can work for you! The bold hue of orange combines with black for a surprisingly posh appeal. While your first inclination would be to go with basic black bottoms, why not a bright, fun pair of orange high-waisted pants or flirty, A-line skirt? Top it with a black sweater or T-shirt or a white blouse and black or zebra-print accessories for a decidedly posh ensemble.
In Part 3, we’ll take a look at three more color combinations that are hitting runways in 2019.
